If you want to know the requirements to become a certified crane inspector, this guide is for you. From the required work experience to formal training requirements and testing, here's all you need to know.
To qualify for a crane inspector certificate, you must meet the following prerequisites:
If you want to become a crane inspector, you'll need to have at least 2,000 hours of experience under your belt. You must also know how to correctly identify defects in the crane's electrical, structural, and mechanical components.
In addition, you must have a minimum of five years of experience performing duties as a crane operator, supervisor, mechanic, or technician.
Even with 2,000 hours of experience, you'll also need to go through formal training, which includes learning all about safety measures and the proper use of tools.
On that note, you'll learn how to operate cranes safely, write reports, and use additional equipment like meters, man-lifts, ladders, and jacks. You must undergo formal training every two years.
One of the last crane inspection certification requirements includes passing a written and practical exam. However, before taking the exam, you must fill out a form on which you will state the following:

These exams will be different, depending on the certificate you are looking for.

The inspector's certificate lasts five years, after which you must renew it. You don't have to take the exams in a specific order, but as you see fit. You'll have 12 months after passing the first one to take another one.
Authorized inspectors will also get a free certification card. However, if you want to take out a replacement card, you'll be charged $25. Since these cards are the property of NCCCO, you may not give them to another person to use. Also, if NCCCO requests it, you must return them.
